S4C is to provide English language commentary on selected sporting fixtures to supplement its main Welsh language broadcasts where rights allow, the channel has announced.

The new service will be available via the red button on S4C Digital on Sky, Freeview, Freesat and Virgin TV in Wales, and outside Wales on Sky and Freesat. The main television soundtrack will continue to be in Welsh.

The service will be financed from S4C’s commercial fund, and not from the public fund which pays for Welsh language content.

All S4C’s domestic football and rugby coverage will carry English commentary via the interactive red button:

Football – Live and highlights coverage of The Principality Welsh Premier League and Welsh Cup as well as highlights of Wales’ home international matches.

Rugby Union – live games in the Magners League, Swalec Cup and live games from the Principality Premiership.

Rugby League – matches featuring Celtic Crusaders games.

Where rights allow, the new service will be available on S4C’s on-line sports broadcasts, at s4c.co.uk.

Iona Jones, S4C Chief Executive, said, “S4C is a Welsh language broadcaster with a remit to provide high quality programmes in the Welsh language. However, the new service will enhance the appeal and accessibility of S4C to the many non-Welsh speakers who watch the channel, particularly our extensive sports output.”

A tender to provide the new service will be published on S4C’s website, s4c.co.uk.

English subtitles are already available on S4C.

Again ITV have messed up with their interactive “press red for HD” on freesat channel 103 for HD compliant freesat set top boxes. The Euro 2008 semi-final Russia v Spain program started at 7:30 pm but the press red for HD banner in the top right hand corner was not available again, thankfully it was available at 7:43 enabling users with HD compliant receivers to watch in HD just before kick off.

This really is poor from ITV after they experienced a similar issue with the Holland v Russia group game, you will be glad to know the Final this Sunday is exclusively on BBC HD which is a dedicated channel rather than the ITV interactive attempt.

The BBC lost their feed from Euro 2008 Germany v Turkey game tonight. The first outage happened at around 9pm on BBC one and BBC HD, BBC one viewers were treated to Radio 5 live radio audio commentary after a short while whereas BBC HD viewers were only presented with an continuity apology screen then eventually given audio from Radio 5 live radio audio commentary. Normal service was restored at around 9:07.

A second outage again occurred at around 9:20 with both BBC one and BBC HD both transferred to Radio 5 live radio audio commentary (during which time Germany scored), pictures was restored at around 9:24 , but with only Standard Definition live pictures on BBC HD but still carrying Radio 5 commentary, normal TV commentary with only SD pictures were available from around 9:34 on BBC HD. It is understood there might be a power outage caused by a thunder storm in Vienna where the game is being hosted which obviously disrupted this Euro 2008 live broadcast.

ITV HD launches for Euro 2008
ITV can today confirm that its high definition television service will launch on Saturday June 7th.

ITV HD will launch with live coverage of the Euro 2008 Championships in Austria and Switzerland and will initially be available to viewers watching on Freesat.

In addition to live coverage of the European Championships, ITV’s HD coverage over the summer will also include a range of top movies.

ITV HD coverage through 2008 will encompass an unrivalled range of free-to-air premium football including the new season of UEFA Champions League, The FA Cup, and England internationals – followed later by selected ITV dramas and acquired programming.

Jonathan Rogers, Director of Operations, ITV Channels, said: “We’re delighted to be able to launch the ITV HD service in time for the European Championships. Alongside an unrivalled line up of free-to-air premium football, as we move through 2008 ITV HD will offer a range of top movies and drama premieres shown in high definition.”

With the 2008 Football European Championship nearly on us, early listings for BBC HD have allocated the same time frames as the SD (Standard Definition) broadcast on BBC HD channel (108) we will update when we get the full schedule released.

It will be interesting to see if ITV HD (which has not officially launched yet but was visible by a key sequence on the Humax Foxsat-HD when the European Cup was broadcast) will be showing Euro 2008 as all broadcasts feeds are provided by the host broadcaster which will be using HD cameras.

This should be a really good showcase for live HD content, just a shame no British side qualified for Euro 2008 which would have really helped to push freesat sales through the roof (if the supply could cope!)
